Biography
Monika Kastner is the Research Chair in Knowledge Translation and Implementation at North York General Hospital, Affiliate Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital, and Associate Professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. Monika’s goals are to improve the health of older adults and to advance the science and practice of knowledge translation (KT). Her program of research involves designing innovative, technology-based KT tools for older adults that optimize health care delivery, clinical decision making, and patient outcomes. In her KT and implementation science work, Monika conducts research to advance the methods of KT and implementation science to facilitate the uptake of knowledge. For example, her team created the Knowledge-activated Tools (KaT) framework which outlines what is needed to design optimized KT tools and products with the best potential for impact. In her work to improve the health of older adults, Monika and her team developed “KeepWell”, a web-based application aimed at supporting the self-management of older adults with multiple chronic conditions. Monika is also investigating how older adults experience social frailty and how we may best involve vulnerable older adults in research. Findings of this work will build on the KeepWell tool. The collective work has great potential for impact, and has been recognized through research grants from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
