DescriptionUsers' security mental models can be highly domain-specific and fail to transfer from one device type to another. Understanding user perspectives on security update requirements for different categories of technology is critical for designers to understand because update failures can put users at risk of harmful security attacks. Manufacturers of Android phones stop providing security updates after only three years, and many users are unaware their phones are not secure. Many smart TVs run on the Android operating system and include vulnerabilities similar to those of computers and smartphones. Americans use Smart TVs widely in the U.S., but many users are unaware that their TV may be vulnerable. This study explored users' perspectives on smart TV and smartphone security risks and security update availability, and behavior changes after security updates end.
