DescriptionThe responsibilities of a human operator in manufacturing have shifted from primarily task performers to more supervisory roles. This shift in workplace responsibilities highlights the increased cognitive demands required in modern manufacturing. To understand currently adopted cognitive load metrics, a literature review was conducted on current human factors research to understand common methodologies used to assess cognitive load. This review aims to highlight the importance of measuring cognitive load in the manufacturing setting as well as, what techniques are available and viable within this setting. This review on cognitive load metrics will highlight potential methods that can be adopted to assess manufacturing workplace performance and safety in the future.
