DescriptionEducational ergonomics addresses the relevance of ergonomics/human factors (E/HF) science to educational systems, particularly at the K-12 level. The benefits that the application of E/HF science might bring to promoting student learning have yet to be widely recognized. Educational ergonomic research points to the conclusion that student learning outcomes are largely defined in terms of an extensive system of design factors and conditions. One notable example is research showing that a highly reliable predictor of 8th grade student performance on Minnesota standardized math and reading tests is the socioeconomic status of the community in which these students reside. The observed consequences of pandemic-related mandated student stay-at-home policies for student learning provide insight into possible contributors to this finding. This research suggests that a promising way for educational systems to fulfill their mission to educate students is to effectively engage their surrounding communities in a systematic and comprehensive manner.
